1 Timothy 3:12 and “Husband of One Wife”: The Series

Praise the Lord, everybody! Pastor D.M. here. We here at The Essential Church are honored to have you join in with us each week, as we worship the Lord in praise, prayer, and preaching, and we thank God for your journey with us as we seek to exalt the Lord and give Him the glory due His Name.

We here at the church want to announce that, starting tomorrow night, Monday, November 6th, we will begin our study into a phrase that we’ve already started some small discussion into some days ago. We’ve said in the blue link in the last sentence that the phrase is gender-inclusive, not gender-exclusive, but the church of Jesus Christ has more questions about the phrase “husband of one wife” than just its gender inclusivity, such as the following:

  • Can a person be married more than once and serve as Deacon or Pastor?
  • Can a person divorce and serve as Deacon or Pastor?
  • Can a newfound Christian divorce and remarry if his or her spouse departs?
  • Can a widow or widower remarry and still serve as Deacon or Pastor?
  • Can a person serve as Deacon or Pastor if he or she annuls a marriage and then marries a second spouse?
  • Can a person engage in polygamous marriage and serve as Deacon or Pastor?

Now, these three questions may be scoffed at by individuals, particularly the last question regarding polygamous marriage, but it would’ve been a real question to ask in the church at Ephesus where worshipping false gods and polygamy were real social customs and an acceptable part of the culture. We may not ask questions regarding polygamy in our day (although Mormons may ask this question), but many of us understand the first four questions in the bullet list above. And these questions all tie into what the phrase “husband of one wife” means.

We want you to pray for this series, as we seek to answer the question, “Does the phrase husband of one wife mean that you can only serve as Pastor or Deacon if you’ve only been married once in your life?” To answer this question, we need to look at marriage, divorce, remarriage, and ministry requirements. We’ll spend the next few weeks answering these questions about marriage and ministry. If you have any questions you want us to answer in the Bible Study, please feel free to contact us at the “Contact” page under the website menu. We’ll do our best to answer those questions and contact you as soon as possible.

As for the series itself, we intend to provide written and audio sources for your convenience (as per our custom), so that won’t change. To see what we’ve been up to, check out our latest sermon on the tongue, The Deadliest Member.

Again, please pray for the series. And feel free to listen in or visit The Essential Church website to keep an eye out for the series as it progresses. We’ll be teaching through 1 Timothy 3:12 and “Husband of One Wife” on our Bible Study nights, Monday (tonight) and Thursday of each week.

We love you, thank God for each of you, and look forward to how this series will bless all those who name the name of Christ in the Body of Christ. God Bless.

In Him,

Pastor D.M. Richardson
